Piaget and His puppies.
Piaget believed that assimilation and accommodation occur at the same time. Assimilation involves interpreting new experiences in terms of existing mental structures without changing them. Accommodation involves changing existing mental structures to explain new experiences (Dianna Van Blerkom, pg 224). The example being that a young child that has a pet puppy will associate the term puppy with any four legged pet they meet next, which is assimilation. Though eventually the child will discover that puppies and cats are different and will change their way of thinking, which is the accommodation part.
